The Alternative School Curricula - Online Class for Teachers

Dr. Roy Weaver is offering an opportunity for anyone interested in 3 semester hours of graduate credit on the topic of alternative education. For about a decade Dr. Weaver served as editor of Changing Schools, as well as organizing alternative education conferences during the late 1970s and 1980s. The course is offered entirely online and will run from June 21 to July 23, 2010. In the course, we will cover the broad range of alternative school models, including free schools, open schools, schools-within-schools, schools-without-walls, magnet schools, charter schools, home schools, and virtual schools.

First Annual Alternative / Charter School Day Held At Camp Ripley

The first annual Alternative / Charter School Day was held last Friday, March 26th at Camp Ripley, near Randall Minnesota.  Education Liaison specialists Dave Bambenek and Mike Bellos arranged for this eye-opening experience.  15 MAAP members from various Charter Schools, Area Learning Centers and On-Line Schools participated.  The group was provided information on the many uses of the Camp, it's historical background and the economic impact of the Camp.  It was extremely impressive to see how environmentally conscious the "Guards" are.  Many students from around Minnesota visit their Environmental Center each year and take advantage of  the wealth of information that they have and are collecting.

The group got an opportunity to tour some of the special service areas.  The "Support Maintenance Shop" was quite a facility.  They repair everything from tanks to radios to night-vision optical devices.  The group also got an opportunity to visit the "Close Combat Tactical Trainers".  These trainers provided us with replicated "real life" experiences of being in a tank or a helicopter.  Below are some of the pictures from our day at Camp Ripley.

On behalf of MAAP, I would like to thank Dave and Mike and the National Guard for making this opportunity available to us.  We look forward to coming back next fall when we host the fall STARS Conference from Camp Ripley.  This should be a great opportunity for our students as well.

MAAP Member, Scott Manni, Receives Teacher of the Year Award

315.jpg

The White Bear Lake ALC is very proud of Scott Manni for being recognized as the White Bear Lake Area Schools “2009 Teacher of the Year.” Scott was formally recognized at a ceremony last Spring.  He was one of many nominees and remained calm and composed throughout the grueling application process and a series of interviews.  Scott has been our Math Teacher in the White Bear Lake ALC for fifteen years.  He actually started teaching here when the doors of the current location opened.  Prior to that, White Bear Lake had an afternoon/evening Alternative Education Program.  Scott was featured in the White Bear Press with a telling article that highlighted his passion for teaching and his focus on the students first.  He clearly states that school is about the people and that passion is what education is all about.  He is guided in his experiences with students because he wants to make sure that they know he cares and that he has great expectations for them.  Scott is currently involved in the application process for the State selection of the next “Teacher of the Year” from Minnesota.  As an added highlight, we have had three other ALC teachers recognized in the finals for Teacher of the Year in our District.  We will be supporting Scott through the next selection process. “Go Bears!”
